ASEAN Energy Regulators' Network

Overview

AERN was officially established on 3 March 2012 with the aim of sharing information in the regulation of energy supply, fostering closer cooperation among the Energy Regulatory Bodies of ASEAN member countries, and promoting sustainability and economic development across the ASEAN region. Malaysia, through ST, is a member of AERN.

Beginning in January 2024, Malaysia, through Suruhanjaya Tenaga, was appointed as the Chair of AERN for a period of two years. In conjunction with this appointment, the 15th and 16th AERN Meetings were held in Malaysia.

Among the key agenda items discussed during the meetings was the role of AERN in supporting ASEAN Power Grid (APG) Regulatory Work under the APG Memorandum of Understanding.

As the Energy Regulatory Body of Malaysia, ST's involvement in such cooperative engagements, particularly those involving international organisations, serves to strengthen ST's image, credibility, and commitment at the ASEAN level. ST's dedication and active participation in programmes at the international level can serve as a platform for ST to gain further international recognition.

ASEAN Summer School for Energy Regulators (ASR)

The Energy Commission of Malaysia (ST), acting as the Chair of the ASEAN Energy Regulators Network (AERN) 2025, successfully hosted the inaugural ASEAN School of Regulation (ASR) from 22–26 September 2025 at the PETRONAS Leadership Centre. This pilot summer school brought together 35 mid-level regulators from across the region to strengthen capacity in crossborder power trade, market integration, renewable energy, and regulatory harmonisation. The program was implemented in collaboration with global partners like ETP, UN ESCAP, and the Florence School of Regulation. This landmark initiative underscores Malaysia’s leadership in advancing the ASEAN Power Grid and fostering a secure, cooperative energy future for the entire region.
