ASEAN Connectivity

ASEAN Connectivity refers to the collective efforts of ASEAN member states to strengthen physical, institutional, and economic linkages in order to support sustainable regional growth. Through various cooperation initiatives, ASEAN seeks to enhance regional integration across strategic sectors such as transportation, trade, digital, and energy.

In the energy sector, this cooperation is strengthened through the development of a regional electricity grid under the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) initiative. The APG aims to connect the power systems of ASEAN countries to enable cross-border electricity trade, improve energy supply security, and support the integration of renewable energy (RE) across the region.

Regional Energy Cooperation

Regional energy cooperation plays an important role in supporting ASEAN’s aspiration to develop a more resilient, secure and integrated energy system. Through the development of cross-border grid infrastructure and the alignment of energy policies, member states can optimise the utilisation of energy resources and promote electricity trade between countries.

One notable example of this cooperation is the implementation of cross-border electricity trade through the Lao PDR–Thailand–Malaysia (LTM) project in 2018, which enabled electricity from Lao PDR to be exported to Malaysia via Thailand’s transmission grid. The initiative was later expanded through the Lao PDR–Thailand–Malaysia–Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP), which has been operational since 2022. This project enables electricity trade among four ASEAN countries through the existing grid network and represents an important step towards the implementation of multilateral power trade across the ASEAN region.
